United Kingdom: when a garage deals with a consumer, anything it says or writes about the service — a quoted price included — becomes a term of the contract if the customer takes it into account when deciding to go ahead (Consumer Rights Act 2015, s. 50). Where the contract neither fixes a price nor says how it is to be fixed, the customer owes a reasonable price, and no more (s. 51).
Werkstattsystem builds the cost estimate from the order itself: catalogue items with a price as flat rates, clocked hours × your labor rate, and parts at the price stored with them in stock. The invoice draft is built from the same lines, and every estimate is kept as its own version.
How the quote is worked out
The same three steps as the form above, in the order a customer reads a quote.
- Labor. Hours × your net labor rate. If you price from a time schedule, enter work units and the minutes one unit stands for; the page turns them into hours first.
- Parts and other items. Parts at purchase price plus your markup, then flat items such as disposal. Each line is rounded to the cent, as on an invoice.
- VAT and overrun. The VAT is computed on the rounded net total. The overrun check shows what the total would be if the job ran over by the percentage you enter.
An example with round numbers

- Labor: 2.5 h × £100.00 = £250.00.
- Parts and other items: £200.00 at purchase price + 25% markup = £250.00, plus £20.00 for other items.
- Total: £520.00 net + 20% VAT (£104.00) = £624.00. If the job ran 10% over, the total would be £686.40.
Three ways a quote loses money
- Parts at cost. Ordering, storage, returns and warranty claims take time and money. A part passed on at its purchase price earns nothing for any of it.
- Only the wrench time. Diagnosis, the test drive and the paperwork are part of the job. If they are not in the quote, they are not in the price.
- No word about overruns. A quote that says nothing about how far the bill may move leaves that conversation for the day the invoice arrives.
Questions about repair quotes
Is a repair quote binding?
That depends on the country and on what was agreed: a fixed price, an estimate and an indicative price are three different promises. The note under the result shows the rule this page has read at its primary source for the country you selected, and says so where it has read none. Write on the quote which of the three it is.
What if the repair costs more than quoted?
Tell the customer before the extra work, not with the invoice. The overrun check shows what the total becomes at 10 or 20 percent over, so the conversation starts with a number. Some countries set a limit in law; others require notice of a substantial overrun without naming a figure.
Hours or work units — which should I use?
Hours if you charge by the clock. Work units if you price from a time schedule in which one unit stands for a fixed number of minutes. Manufacturers define their units differently, so the page takes the minutes per unit from you and turns them into hours.
Should parts go on the quote at purchase price?
Only if you want to earn nothing on them. Enter your purchase price and your markup; the parts markup calculator shows what a markup means as a margin and carries the percentage back here.
Which VAT rate applies?
The buttons offer the rates this page has read at the tax authority of the selected country. Nothing is preselected, because the right rate depends on the country and sometimes on the item: in Ireland, vehicle repair is taxed at the reduced rate, while tires, batteries and mirrors supplied in a repair stay at the standard rate.
Is anything I enter sent or saved?
No. The calculation runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent or stored. A rate handed over from the labor rate calculator travels in the part of the address after the #, which browsers do not send to the server.
